Let’s work together to build a data science track for public affairs programs that will increase the competence of public service professionals to make use of their own data to solve public problems.  As NASPAA members have discussed at many meetings, most of our Schools are trying to improve the competencies of our students around using data science and confidential government data to improve public policy and management. There is a real need for this initiative. The new Federal Data Strategy and the Foundations of Evidence Based Policy Act offer a further impetus in this direction.

Participate in a webinar on Wednesday, May 8, from 11:30 am- 12:30 pm EDT. Participants from all NASPAA schools are welcome!

Results and work products stemming from this meeting will form the basis of a broader discussion at the NASPAA conference in October.

The idea is to develop a track that could be offered both as part of an existing MPA program and as a stand-alone certificate class (such as that piloted by the Coleridge Initiative) for government agency staff. The track would be built around the use of government administrative records, such as unemployment insurance wage records, Medicare and Medicaid data, etc. This track and its associated competencies would be voluntary and not required for NASPAA accreditation or similar—it’s about the future, and preparing our students for a different world of public service in the years ahead.
