How did you select your graduate school and how did it prepare you for your career? > I chose Widener because of its reputation and program that was able to accommodate someone like myself who was working full-time. Widener also has an excellent teaching staff, including professionals in the field, and takes a personal interest in your education. After I graduated, I was promoted to Assistant Manager/Director of Planning. My degree had much to do with that promotion. In addition, the varied skills that I learned at Widener were instrumental in helping me in the field. Any work or internship experience during graduate school? > While in graduate school, I was the Assistant Township Manager of Montgomery Township working in a wide variety of projects with respect to Township administration including park projects, environmental issues, development concerns, road projects, and budgeting. What was the most important or useful course you took in the MPA/MPP? > I can't point to one particular course that was most useful. I found it interesting that all the courses were built on each other. Skills that I learned in one course carried over into the next course. Were you a Presidential Management Intern? > No. What has been your career path since graduating? What do you want to be doing in 5 years? > Since graduation, I was promoted to Assistant Township Manager/Director of Planning. In five years, I see myself working in the same field in some capacity. What is the most exciting and/or interesting aspect of your current job? > I like the fact that every day is different. Each day presents new issues and challenges and no two days are the same. Do you feel your MPA/MPP is helping you to “make a difference?” How? > Absolutely. It has given me additional skills necessary to better serve the community in which I am working. What advice, if any, would you give to an undergraduate thinking about going for an MPA/MPP? > Enroll in a program as soon as possible. Your MPA/MPP will give you a competitive edge in your career path. Also take the time to learn about the program before you enroll and choose a program that best meets your objectives.
