Harlan Jefferson began his public service career in 1985, while enrolled in the Master of Public Administration program, as an administrative assistant in the city of Denton. He left Denton in 1989 to become assistant to the city manager in Jackson, Michigan. But the warm hearts and climate of Texas drew him back to Denton where in 1992 he was appointed director of treasury operations for the city, then director of fiscal operations in 1994. Since 1997, he has served as deputy city manager and chief financial officer for the Town of Flower Mound. Mr. Jefferson is a member of the Government Finance Officers Association of Texas, the Government Finance Officers Association of the US and Canada, Government Treasurer's Organization of Texas, the Municipal Treasurer's Association of the United States and Canada, the National Forum for Black Public Administrators, and serves on the Board of Directors for the Denco Area 9-1-1 District. Along with his wife, Vickie, of 15 years, and his daughters Taylor and Peyton, Mr. Jefferson currently resides in Flower Mound. While at UNT, Mr. Jefferson received several awards including selection as a Hatton W. Sumners Scholar while in the MPA program.
