II. ACCREDITATION, QUALITY & STANDARDS REVISION 2009
NASPAA Accreditation Standards Updated!
This is a reminder to all accredited programs or potential applicants that NASPAA-accredited schools passed a “Diversity Across the Curriculum” Standard at the NASPAA Annual Meeting in Seattle. The new language adds an additional element to the common curriculum components, asking programs to articulate how they address diversity across the curriculum. You can view the NASPAA Standards with the new language here: http://www.naspaa.org/accreditation/seeking/reference/standards.asp.

Note that all programs submitting Self-Studies in August 2008 or later will be asked to address this component in their Self-Study Report and during their site visit review. COPRA is currently working on instructions for this Standard but generally plans to treat this component in a manner consistent with all other common curriculum components.

IV. UPCOMING EVENTS, SCHOOL UPDATES & OTHER NEWS
Institute of Public Administration Australia (IPAA) Conference
The Institute of Public Administration Australia (IPAA) is the professional association for people interested in government reform, policy issues, trends, best practice and innovation in public sector management.
The 2008 IPAA National Conference will be held in Sydney, Australia, on Thursday 19 and Friday 20 June 2008 in the Crystal Palace Convention Center at Sydney's iconic Luna Park.

A pre-conference Academic Day will be held on Wednesday 18 June 2008. Academic and practitioner researchers are invited to submit proposals for papers or panels for the Academic Day which will focus on the key themes of the conference and the future direction and challenges for public administration theory and research. The Conference organizers particularly encourage proposals that adopt a comparative and international perspective and address the implications of research findings for public administrators.

The IPAA National Conference will focus on four key themes:

Organisational Capacity Building: the business of work, eg, workforce planning, performance management, governance and ethics

Partnerships: partnering with the private sector, other departments, other levels of government, NGOs and universities, and partnering models such as Governing by Network

Service Delivery: innovative models of service delivery, and interaction between departments and levels of government

Communities: working with engaged communities, and unpacking community.

The Academic Day will examine these four themes by asking what is shaping and influencing the activities of public sector agencies across these core functions. How might these functions change in the future and what challenges are likely to emerge? Can public administration theory explain the continued effort to modernize the structures, relationships and processes of public administration?

If you are interested in submitting a paper for consideration, please provide an abstract of up to 300 words (by mail to the address below or preferably by email in a format compatible with MS Word and including National IPAA Conference paper abstract Academic Day in the Subject line), accompanied by your full contact details including affiliation, by the abstract deadline of Thursday 28 February 2008.

For more information on the Conference please visit www.ipaa2008.org.au or contact Craig Boaden at craig@nsw.ipaa.org.au if you have any questions. Many thanks.

MPP Graduate Excels in Digital World and Has Tips For Schools

Chris Wolz has an MPP from the Kennedy School. Along with a classmate, he founded a digital marketing company. Chris wrote this short essay to help make better sense of social networking web sites. The days of focusing your online strategy on (only) your own web site ended in 2007. Facebook, YouTube, Digg and other social networking and social media sites are huge and no longer just for college kids and techies. These "social" sites offer a lot of potential for issue-focused groups to reach and engage with the people who care about their issues. Facebook alone, for example, grew in the past year from about 15 million active users to 60 million today - and in that 60 million there are people who care deeply about issues.

Some groups are already using these social services to build connections and personal engagement, for example, The Nature Conservancy on StumbledUpon, the "Support the Monks' Protest in Burma" effort on FaceBook, the "Innovate or Die" environmental invention contest on YouTube and the Humane Society on MySpace.

In 2008 organizations need to decide on which of these sites to participate, how to participate and manage the interactions, how to measure success, and more. Social Media management is going to grow into a big deal for organizations - and it won't be long before there are top level management like "Director of Social Media!"

Davos World Economic Forum Founder & Mpa Grad On Corporate Social Responsibility

Global corporate citizenship means that companies must not only be engaged with stakeholders but be stakeholders themselves alongside governments and civil society. Since companies depend on global development, which in turn relies on stability and increased prosperity, it is in their direct interest to help improve the state of the world.

How are People Finding Jobs: From Weddle Employment Survey

How are people finding jobs? It's an important question, of course, because answering it correctly enables you to make smart decisions when selecting recruitment advertising venues and, as a result, upgrade the quality of the candidates you are able to recruit.

Traditional "source of hire" surveys turn to us, the recruiters who interact with job candidates, to answer the question. It's a reasonable approach, I guess, but one that has at least two serious problems:

* First, we rely on our applicant tracking systems and the data they collect from candidates to provide the answer. Many of these systems, however, force candidates to identify their source of information about an opening by selecting from an often incomplete and out-of-date list and thus are notoriously inaccurate.
* Second, source of hire surveys normally sample a very small population of employers and collect the data they report as averages. They then establish an overall set of results by averaging the employers' averages, an approach which can overemphasize data trends and minimize important data anomalies.

Colleges Seek 'Authenticity' in Students
By Justin Pope, AP Education Writer

If there's a sign of the times in college admissions, it may be this: Steven Roy Goodman, an independent college counselor, tells clients to make a small mistake somewhere in their application -- on purpose.

"Sometimes it's a typo," he says. "I don't want my students to sound like robots. It's pretty easy to fall into that trap of trying to do everything perfectly and there's no spark left."

What Goodman is going for is "authenticity" -- an increasingly hot selling point in college admissions as a new year rolls around.

In an age when applicants all seem to have volunteered, played sports and traveled abroad, colleges are wary of slick packaging. They're drawn to high grades and test scores, of course, but also to humility and to students who really got something out of their experiences, not just those trying to impress colleges with their resume.

The trend seemingly should make life easier for students -- by reducing the pressure to puff up their credentials. But that's not always the case. Read full article

Employers Want New Way to Judge Graduates Beyond Tests, Grades
By Mary Beth Marklein, USA TODAY

Colleges have been scrambling over the past year to respond to recommendations from a national commission that they be clearer to the public about what students have learned by the time they graduate.

Sometime in the next several weeks, for example, a national online initiative will be launched that allows families to compare colleges on measures such as whether they improve a student's critical-thinking skills.

Tools for such measurements were recommended by the national commission, which was created by Education Secretary Margaret Spellings. The group released its recommendations in late 2006.
Now, a sampling of the nation's employers have weighed in. And they are not terribly impressed.

The survey of 301 business leaders nationwide suggests that colleges find ways to assess a student's ability to apply college learning to real-world settings. Read full article

At 71, Physics Professor Is a Web Star - New York Times
By SARA RIMER

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — Walter H. G. Lewin, 71, a physics professor, has long had a cult following at M.I.T. And he has now emerged as an international Internet guru, thanks to the global classroom the institute created to spread knowledge through cyberspace.

Professor Lewin’s videotaped physics lectures, free online on the OpenCourseWare of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, have won him devotees across the country and beyond who stuff his e-mail in-box with praise.

“Through your inspiring video lectures i have managed to see just how BEAUTIFUL Physics is, both astounding and simple,” a 17-year-old from India e-mailed recently.

Steve Boigon, 62, a florist from San Diego, wrote, “I walk with a new spring in my step and I look at life through physics-colored eyes.”

Professor Lewin delivers his lectures with the panache of Julia Child bringing French cooking to amateurs and the zany theatricality of YouTube’s greatest hits. He is part of a new generation of academic stars who hold forth in cyberspace on their college Web sites and even, without charge, on iTunes U, which went up in May on Apple’s iTunes Store.
