Home > News > Japan relief $800 raised to support public affairs students in Japan NASPAA’s Tohoku University Relief campaign to support graduate students in public affairs in Sendai, Japan raised almost $800! Messages of support were received from across the country, as well as from Nicaragua and Namibia. We thank everyone in the NASPAA community who donated--students, faculty, staff, and friends--, sent a message of support, or forwarded the information to their students.
The scope and scale of Japan’s March 11 earthquake and tsunami are almost incomprehensible. Weeks later, hundreds of miles away, even Tokyo is struggling with maintaining electricity and potable water. Most of us can hardly imagine what life must be like for those affected.
But even inside the worst-hit city, Sendai, at the epicenter of the
earthquake, there is one familiar place: the
School of Public Policy* at
Tohoku
University. Until very recently, its students and
faculty spent their days in classes and research. Now, many have
suffered tremendous personal losses, though fortunately all have
been confirmed safe.
In the months ahead, we hope to create opportunities for students to
exchange ideas and experience, about emergency management,
environmental contamination, public health issues, community
recovery and planning, and other critical issues Japan's students
and faculty face.
