In July 2006, Felipe Calderon was elected President of Mexico. He will assume the position in December 2006 to serve a six-year term. Calderon has said his government will focus on developing human capital to transform Mexico into a developed country. He says he plans to promote economic growth and sustainable development. Calderon has previously served as Secretary of Energy, as well as director of Banobras, a state owned bank. From 1996-1999, Calderon was the president of the National Action Party.
