Ellen Sirleaf is President of Liberia and the first elected female president of an African country. On March 15, 2006, she addressed a joint meeting of the United States Congress asking for American support to help her country become “a brilliant beacon, an example to Africa and the world of what love and liberty can achieve.” Aside from her current role, she has lived and worked in both Africa and the United States. In Africa she was the Vice President of Citibank, a founding member of the International Institute for Women in Political Leadership, and the Director of the UN Development Program Regional Bureau for Africa.
