Eileen
Mason is the Senior Deputy Chairman of the National Endowment
for the Arts. Prior to joining the Endowment, Mason served on
the Board of Directors of the Montgomery Council Arts and
Humanities Council and served for 22 years as a manager and
policy maker at the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission and the
Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. She has also served as
Vice President for Grants, and on the Music Advisory Panel for
the Maryland State Arts Council. Before entering Federal
service, Mason worked as a book editor at Little, Brown in
Boston and at Acropolis Books in Washington, DC. She received
her Masters in Public Affairs from American University. Mason
says of her graduate education, "The courses are
realistic and practical: what one learns is what one does and
encounters in Federal service. The courses give you the
framework: why public administration in this country is
characterized by merit, fairness, and representative
democracy. I thought that a Masters in Public Administration
attained through the Key Executive Program in the School of
Public Affairs would give me the background and framework to
better understand the underpinnings of public service and
especially Federal service. I was correct, and entered the
Senior Executive Service in 2001." Source:
